The term comes from the French word "balayer," meaning to sweep. It's a term that refers to the way the colour is applied, not the colour itself. Balayage is a technique where hair colour is hand painted onto the hair to create a graduated, more natural-looking sun kissed highlighted effect.
A good balayage is all about placement and blending. Having contrast between the light and dark tones is what creates natural looking, lived-in dimension. Each balayage is custom based on your hair colour, texture and length.
